Book Review: Joe Cipriano’s ‘Living on Air’
On Tuesday, September 3rd, at 8 p.m. EST., Joe Cipriano will be a special guest on the VO Book Club. See link below!
Joe Cipriano’s Living on Air is one of those rare books that you can’t put down, finishing in just a couple of sittings. Even if you don’t recognize his name, you’ve undoubtedly heard his voice—Cipriano has been the iconic voice behind major radio stations, network promos for Fox, CBS, NBC, and ESPN, as well as live announcements for the Primetime Emmy Awards and the Grammys. His voice also graces popular shows like America’s Got Talent, Deal or No Deal, and more.
The book immediately draws you in with Cipriano’s passionate pursuit of a life on the airwaves. As a teenager, he was awe-struck during his first visit to a radio station, sparking a relentless drive that led him to build a makeshift studio in his bedroom. This early glimpse into Cipriano’s journey is both endearing and inspiring, making you root for his success right from the start. This is the hallmark of a great biography—even when you know the outcome, you’re emotionally invested in the journey, especially if you’re a voiceover artist looking for inspiration.
Cipriano’s rise from an eager teenager to a successful voiceover actor is as fascinating as the industry’s unpredictable nature. He candidly shares the highs and lows of his career, from soaring successes to sudden financial setbacks. These moments resonate deeply, particularly for anyone who’s faced similar challenges. Cipriano’s approach to overcoming obstacles—often with the support of friends and colleagues—reveals his tenacity and wisdom. Despite skipping a traditional university education, his stories of perseverance and seizing opportunities are lessons in resilience.
The book also offers a behind-the-scenes look at Cipriano’s life in Los Angeles, filled with glamorous anecdotes that will delight any showbiz enthusiast. It’s heartfelt storytelling at its best, earning Living on Air a well-deserved spot on my bookshelf.
A special mention goes to the audiobook, which is far from a conventional, dry read. Narrated by Cipriano himself, it’s a treat that’s elevated by the direction of Marice Tobias, audio design by AJ McKay, and original music by Greg Chun—all industry veterans. Their collaboration makes this one of the best audiobook experiences I’ve had. It’s no surprise that Living on Air was recognized for Outstanding Audio Book Narration by the Society of Voice Arts and Sciences (SOVAS) in 2014.
If you want to hear directly from the maestro himself, Joe Cipriano will be the special guest on the VO Book Club, which inspired me to pick up Living on Air in the first place. He’ll join the discussion on Tuesday, September 3rd, at 8 p.m. EST. Be sure to request access to the book club ahead of time to secure your spot. Hope to see you there!
